I love how excited the kids get to receive Valentines cards from their classmates. There is really nothing I dislike about it but believe we should spread that love all year long

Valentine's Day 1995 when my boyfriend and I adopted our dog, Emily. We actually got her 2 days before Valentine's Day. She was only 6 weeks old and was from a litter of 7 puppies. She "chose" us; after being at the owner's home for over an hour playing with the puppies, I stood up and felt something weighing down the bottom of my coat. It was Emily who had curled up inside it while I was sitting on the floor!
I was quite young when I adopted her and she taught me what is meant to be a "mother". She helped me get through 2 separate cancers and gave me a reason to keep going. She got very sick when she was 11 years old (6 weeks after my 2nd cancer diagnosis) and she wasn't expected to survive, but I nursed her completely back to health. She fought to get better because she knew how much I needed her to help me get through that 2nd cancer. She lived 4 more years and passed away 1/26/10. It's been 3 years that she's gone and I still miss her terribly. But every Valentine's Day, I'm reminded of when I adopted her and how much joy she brought into mine and my boyfriend's lives. She's the child I never had and will always hold a special place in my heart

I love lots of things about Valentine's Day: candy, flowers, sentiment. What I don't like are the sleazy commercials that promote Valentine's gifts. There's always a leering guy winking and a someone referencing Valentine's "night".
